No. 20 Wheeling Jesuit dispatches Notre Dame, 3-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (Oct. 16) - The No. 20 Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-15) win over Notre Dame (Ohio) Tuesday evening in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 20 for the fourth week in-a-row by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), improve to 22-3 overall and 9-0 in league play. Meanwhile, the Falcons fall to 4-4 in the MEC, 11-12 overall this season.

Sophomore Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center), who earlier today was named MEC Player of the Week, led the team with 15 kills and 14 digs for her 13th kill-dig double-double this season. Junior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) and freshman Allonda Watkins (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) each chipped in double-digit kills with 12 and 11, respectively.

Junior setter Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) established a new season-high in a three-set match with 49 assists to go with 11 digs to record a double-double of her own. Sophomore Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) led the defense with 15 digs.

There was very little separation in the opening set with the largest lead for either team coming when the Cardinals took an 8-5 advantage. Both squads traded kills to tie the match an incredible 13 times after that three-point WJU lead, eventually settling at a 23-23 tie. The Cardinals managed to create separation at the best time of the set, notching the final two points on a Makenna Babb (Arlington, Ohio/McComb) kill and a block by Kramer and sophomore Chase Cole (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) for a 25-23 win.

Wheeling Jesuit kept the momentum going from its narrow win in the first set and easily cruised to a pair of victories in the next two frames to close out the 3-0 sweep.

Notre Dame's Mary Kate McHugh, who shared this week MEC Player of the Week honor with Meyer, posted a match-high 21 kills with 13 digs in the loss.

The Cardinals remain on the road and will travel to Shepherdstown, West Virginia on Friday, October 19 for a match versus Shepherd at 7 p.m.
