WJU Women’s Basketball Hits MEC Road, Tries to Extend Winning Run

ATHENS, W.Va. & WISE, Va. – For the New Year, the Cardinals could not have started better. The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team will try to continue it 2018 success this weekend with two Mountain East Conference road contests at Concord Thursday night and UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (6-8/4-4 MEC) square off with the Mountain Lions of Concord (4-7/2-6 MEC) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday night, Jan. 11. The team heads further south to play in the David J. Prior Center against the Cavaliers (2-11/1-7 MEC) on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13, starting at 2 p.m.

WJU ran off two MEC victories last week with a 78-72 road win at Charleston, before it coasted past West Virginia State, 86-54. Concord and UVa-Wise did not fare as well in the opening week of January. Both opponents dropped their road games at Shepherd and Fairmont State. Concord fell short at Shepherd (78-66) and Fairmont State (77-63), while UVa-Wise dropped its games at Fairmont State (65-53) and Shepherd (74-66).

WJU takes long winning streaks against both Concord and UVa-Wise into the weekend. The Cardinals have prevailed over the Mountain Lions in the last 10 meetings and have not lost since the Feb. 27, 2012 meeting (85-57) in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first round. Against the Cavaliers, the Cardinals have won each of the nine meetings, including a 74-68 win in the MEC Semifinals last March 4.
