WJU Takes Two, Defeats Ship and Clarion

WHEELING, W.Va. – The 2017 Cardinals volleyball finally made their home debut on Friday. Wheeling Jesuit took two with a sweep of Shippensburg and a harder-fought victory over Clarion in the nightcap, 3-1.
 
The Cardinals (6-4) spurted out to comfortable leads in each of the three sets against the Raiders (5-4) before the set finals of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-11. In the late game, WJU had a solid first set, 25-15, but Clarion outlasted a 26-24 second set. The home team held serve for 25-19 and 25-21 final two set wins.
 
In the two matches, Cassie Meyer and Haley Kramer continued to pace the WJU frontline. Meyer downed 13 early kills and added 18 winners against Clarion. Meyer also had 17 digs with 10 in the night game. Kramer hit 11 kills in 21 attempts without an error for a .524 hit percentage against Shippensburg, before she had 14 kills in the late contest.
 
Maddy Smyth chipped in nine kills in the first game and Makenna Babb hit double figures with 10 kills in the second contest. Babb also dug 15 attacks against the Raiders. Aleah Stauffer came off the bench with 10 strong kills and a .421 percentage in the final three sets versus Clarion.
 
Stephanie Sylvester totaled a career-high 49 assists against Clarion and 87 for the day to go with 22 digs and two aces. Audrey Francis produced a season-high 34 digs in the night match and another 20 early on Friday.
 
WJU stays at home for day two of the WJU Invitational. The Cardinals face the Rock of Slippery Rock in an 11 a.m. match and Pitt-Johnstown to finish the weekend at 6:30 p.m.
