No. 10 Griffins Push Past Cardinals in Key Third Period Burst

WHEELING, W.Va. – After an even first half, the No. 10-ranked Seton Hill men's lacrosse team pushed past Wheeling Jesuit in the season finale with opening four third-period goals and 14-10 win.

Tied at eight, Seton Hill (10-4) netted the first four scores of period number three over a 12:08 time frame for a 12-8 advantage. Jamison Smith fired home his fourth goal of the game for the Cardinals (6-8) with 1:51 in the third, but the Griffins answered with another goal in the final seven seconds and did not allow the home team closer than three goals in the final 15-plus minutes.

With the loss, WJU saw its five-match win streak ended, but the squad bounced back with a strong late-season surge to 6-8 after a 1-7 start to the season. The Cardinals also honored their five seniors – Hayden Binnix, Luke Gilman, Kellen McMahon, Joe Wright and Jack Brandenburg.

Smith led the home attack with a career-high four goals. Jordan Getz added three goals and an assist.

Travis Getz chipped in one goal and one assists, while Matt Lee and Mike Stillings had one score. Gilman assisted on one goal and scooped six ground balls. McLean Fitzmartin, Trenton Kindall and Wright assisted one on WJU score each.

Goalie Jake Lilly saved 13 Seton Hill shots on goal.

Seton Hill was led by Bennett Johnson's three goals and one assist. The Griffins outshot the Cardinals, 36-28, and put more shots on goal, 27-21.

The Griffins put the match's first two goals into the net, before Jordan Getz put the Cardinals on the scoreboard at 9:27 in the opening frame.

Down 3-1, WJU edged ahead with three scores in a row via one each of Smith and both Getz brothers for a 4-3 lead. Seton Hill tied the match, 4-4, to end the first.

Smith and Matt Lee scored 50 seconds apart in the early second quarter and Jordan Getz made it 7-5 after a visitor score at 8:05. Seton Hill rebounded with three goals in a row, before Smith's third goal at 1:54 sent the two teams tied, 8-8, at intermission.

In the fourth quarter trailing 13-9, Stillings wrapped around a couple Griffin defenders for a Cardinal goal with 6:51. It would be the closest the home team would get at 13-10 as Seton Hill netted the match's final goal.
