WJU Outlasts UC, Clinches Back-to-Back Regular Season Titles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – And the Cardinals have done it. Wheeling Jesuit outlasted the Charleston Golden Eagles, 16-8, Friday evening to clinch back-to-back Mountain Conference regular season titles.

Friday's victory checked off a few season accomplishments for the Cardinals. For the second year in a row, WJU is not only the league champion, but also undefeated in conference play. The Cardinals climbed above the season .500-mark for the first time, finishing the regular season at 8-7 overall and 5-0 in MEC play.

Ally Coggins scored the first goal of the evening for the Cardinals with 27:33 on the clock. Paige Plesich converted a free position attempt moments later to put the visitors ahead by two goals.

Elizabeth Hales scored twice in an 18-second span to help WJU ahead by three, 4-1. UC would answer with the next score, and neither club would strike again until the 16-minute mark when Sarah Artzer regained the Cardinals three-goal advantage, 5-2.

Charleston once again responded, this time with a pair of goals to pull within a score, 5-4. Coggins, though, scored at 2:20 and Mary Burns at 1:45 to stretch WJU's lead to three, 7-4, at the half.

Burns scored the first goal of the second half on a free position man-up attempt. Coggins, Taylor Booth, Kori Hickman, and Taelor Mailloux claimed the next four goals to increase WJU's lead to eight goals, 12-4. Hickman and Booth scored yet again, and before the crowd knew it, Wheeling Jesuit had opened a 10-goal advantage, 14-4.

The Golden Eagles would score back-to-back goals before Burns and Hickman added their third goals of the match, regaining the Cardinals 10-goal lead.

The Cardinals would go on to outlast the Golden Eagles, 16-8.

Hickman and Burns led the way with four-point efforts. Burns won four draw controls and shot five times while Hickman added a draw control to her three goal and one assist output.

Coggins and Hales each scored three times on the night. Plesich and Booth contributed two points apiece while Mailloux, Lyndsay Carpetner, and Arzter finished with one point.

Carpenter led the defense once again with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Markie Wright, Brianna Wahle, and Olivia Krock each scooped up a ground ball. Taylor Quigg added two caused turnovers to her yearly output. Maire Austin stopped a season-high 15 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit will host the 2017 MEC women's lacrosse tournament beginning on Friday, May 5. First round matches will be played on Friday at 4 and 7 with the championship match to begin Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m.
