MEC Semis Preview: Rivalry Renewed Part III: Cardinals vs. ‘Toppers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – 
After two of the best regular season games covering 105 minutes of action, it will be the Rivalry Renewed Part III of the 2016-17 campaign. Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty test their mettles this time in the Mountain East Conference Semifinals Saturday night.
 
The Cardinals (23-6) versus the Hilltoppers (26-3) will be the final contest at 8:15 p.m. of the MEC Semifinal Saturday played in the Charleston Civic Center. Following the two women's basketball Semifinals, top-seeded Fairmont State (28-1) against No. 4 seed Shepherd (19-10) at 6 p.m.
 
The Saturday night match will be the so-called 'rubber match' between the two rivals. The first two meetings have been instant classics. On Jan. 19th, West Liberty took away a double overtime 96-90 victory. A week ago exactly, Wheeling Jesuit even the season series with a 101-98 triple overtime marathon.
 
In fact, the two Ohio Valley programs have split each of the last three seasons' matchups covering six meetings.
 
The two opponents advanced on Friday in different styles. West Liberty had to finish strong over the final two minutes for a tight 75-71 win over Glenville State. Wheeling Jesuit used an efficient effort and posted a 90-63 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.
