Tars Net Game-Winner Over Cardinals in Final Half Minute

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team saw its first victory of the season slip away as Rollins netted the game-winner with 34 seconds left in the match for a 10-9 win on Thursday night.

Leading 7-5 at intermission, the Cardinals (0-4) opened the second half with scores by Derreck Downs and Luke Gilman for a four-goal advantage in the first 6:06. The Tars (4-1) finished the third period with a pair of goals, before they produced the only three goals of the final period, including two in 14 seconds apart at 48 and 34 seconds on the clock.

"(Despite the tough start to the season), The guys on this team are winners. We have tremendous talent and character within this program, and there is no reason for any of these guys to hang their heads," stressed Cardinals head coach Landon DelPrince.

Downs paced the WJU attack with three goals and two assists. Matt Lee added a goal and one assist.

Joe Wright, Gilman, Trenton Kindall, Travis Gets and Jordan Getz accounted for one goal apiece.

Goalie Jake Lilly stopped 14 Rollins shots.

The Tars put the first goal on the board only to see the Cardinals come back with three of their own, including a pair from Downs.

Rollins answered with the next three goals, before WJU produced four of the final five first-half goals for a 7-5 lead. The final two WJU goals came from Kindall with 56 seconds, before Wright turned a home turnover into a score with four ticks on the first-half clock.

WJU will complete its Florida road trip with a Saturday morning, March 4, match at Florida Tech. Opening face off is slated for 11 a.m.
