Cardinals Dominate Saturday Duals, Set Win Mark

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – For the third year in a row, the Cardinals have set their dual win record. In dominating fashion, the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team won 18 of 20 bouts and outscored Shippensburg and LIU Post by a combined 73-8 margin Saturday afternoon, 37-4 and 36-4.

With the three weekend victories, the Cardinals improved to a four-year program-best 12 dual wins (12-5) after they were 11-6 last season. WJU dropped only the 149-pound match in each of the two duals against Shippensburg (10-12) and LIU Post (10-7) with nine Cardinals earning victories in each dual.

"We've been working hard to identify our issues with competing on the road. It's been a topic for us for the past month. I'm really proud of every single effort over these past two days and it's rare to say that over a three-match stretch," explained WJU head coach Sean Doyle. "We wrestled a number of opponents ranked in the region and won every single match that was important for us moving into regionals. There were 25 matches wrestled over the two days and we won 22 of them so that's encouraging at this time of the year."

WJU started the weekend with a solid 33-12 victory at East Stroudsburg.

Maxwell Lacey posted the lone Cardinals pin of the day when he finished the dual against Shippensburg. Nolan Whitely (141) produced the only other bonus-point win with a major decision over Shippensburg's Jared Leonetti.

WJU completes it dual meet season next Friday night at home for 'Senior Night.' The Cardinals host the Griffins of Seton Hill in a 7 p.m. match.

"I'm looking forward to celebrating our seniors next Friday. Everything seen within our program is a credit to what they started less than four years ago," added Doyle.

vs. Shippensburg

Jacob Donahue showed how strong he is on top. He held the Region's 5th-rated wrestler Dustin Steffenino scoreless and earned the lone match point via riding time, 1-0.

At 133, Dustin Warner followed Donhue's lead and also won his bout, 3-2, after taking down Cole Rush to tie the match.

Whitely notched his 11-2 major after he made point separation off a back-point combination. After the lone loss at 149, Brusco (157) kept the control going with a third-period escape and riding time point for the 2-0 win.

Nic Skonieczny made a third-period takedown, before he finished the 5-2 win at 165. Following a 174-pound Reyse Wallbrown forfeit, Anthony Smith registered a late first-period takedown and added another later in the match for his 6-3 decision at 184.

At 197, Terrance Fanning received a forfeit, before Lacey pinned Ship's Berberick in 1:11 to end the match.

vs. LIU Post

Donahue, again, held his opponent scoreless and won with a takedown and back points, 5-0.

For the second time on the day, Warner used the riding time bonus point for the 3-2 win at 133 over the Region's No. 6 Anthony Sparacio. Whitely made it 9-0 WJU with a 5-2 win over No. 7 Vinny Turano of Post in the 141-pound match.

After the Pioneers' 149-pound win by No. 2 rated TJ Fabian, Brusco started another string of Cardinals win with a first and third period takedown in a 5-1 win.

Wallbrown edged out a 2-1 win at 174 with a second-period takedown and Lacey added a 9-2 heavyweight win. Skoniezny, Smith and Fanning received forfeits.
