Cardinals Use Solid Mat Effort Over Warriors, Post 10th Victory

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – For the second year in a row, Cardinals wrestling is in double figures for dual wins. Heavyweight Maxwell Lacey punctuated six winning bouts with a fall and helped Wheeling Jesuit's solid effort over East Stroudsburg, 33-12.

After his thrilling last-second win last Friday, Lacey capped the Cardinals (10-5) night with a fall over the Warriors' (4-12) Dan Makagon in 5:56. WJU also picked up decision wins by Jacob Donahue (125), Dustin Warner (133), Dominick Nania (149), Greg Brusco (157), and Terrance Fanning (197).

"I am extremely happy with our effort late in matches tonight. We won four matches to quality kids from ESU by just being hard-nosed in the third period," said WJU head coach Sean Doyle. "Being six hours from home and out of your comfort zone, it tests you, so it was encouraging to see the guys respond well."

The Cardinals win notched their 10th dual win of the year and gives them an opportunity to tie and break last year's 11-victory season Saturday afternoon. WJU treks to Shippensburg for a noon match, before it adds a 2 p.m. bout in the same location against LIU Post.

Starting off the night, Donahue picked up where he left off his hot January. The 125-pound freshman rode out his ESU foe the entire second period in a scoreless bout. In the third, Donahue escaped off the bottom right away and continued the momentum to an 8-1 victory.

Warner trailed the Warriors' Connor Maliff, 2-0, after two periods despite having a 1:14 riding time advantage. The WJU junior registered a takedown with 48 seconds left and 3-2 win for a 6-0 visitor lead.

No. 9-ranked Dylan Nace showed his might with a 2:29 pin over WJU's Brandon Tenney for the lone home wrestled win.

Following a bout-tying escape in the second period, Nania rode out Blake Cohen for the 4-3 decision in the 149-class match.

Joining three other 20-win teammates, freshman Brusco fought his way back and had his arm raised in victory. Trailing 4-3 after two periods, Brusco escaped, took down Joey Kratochvil with a minute left and earned the 7-4 win. The first-year Cardinal is now 20-8.

After two ESU forfeits at 165 and 174, WJU did not fill the 184-pound match and forfeited to make it a 24-12 team score.

Fanning continued his strong late season with a 5-4 decision at 197, before Lacey's fall finale.
