Cardinals Pitchers Fire Pair of Shutouts, Give Pelegreen Perfect Debut

CLERMONT, Fla. – A first-year and first-time coach could not ask for more in her first official games at the helm. The Wheeling Jesuit softball team's Mallory Chapman and Erin Unterbrink fired seven-hit shutouts – 1-0 over Lake Erie and 4-0 versus Point Park – for Cardinals head coach Sara Pelegreen's first two career coaching victories.

The Cardinals (2-0) used first-inning magic in both contests and never trailed. In the opener's top of the first, Molly Welsh drew a bases-loaded walk for what turned out to be the lone run versus the Storm (0-1). Against the Pioneers (0-2), Dana Achille plated two on a sacrifice hit and Jackie Cramer sliced a two-run single.

Chapman and Unterbrink combined for 10 strikeouts against two walks and 14 hits over their 14 unscored upon frames. Chapman fanned two, while Unterbrink struck out eight without giving up a free pass.

"We had all-around great at bats and when you give yourself a chance, good things happen," exclaimed Pelegreen. "We always tell our girls to sell out, and they did all day long today. I'm so proud of this team and the culture we are building. Today was a good day one and we have a lot to look forward to."

Kelsi Thompson went 3 for 3 with a run and walk in the opener and Victoria Scott singled twice in the second contest. Cramer, Cassie Holstein and Chapman accounted for the other three WJU hits.

vs. Lake Erie

Cramer drew a one-out walk in the top of the first. Thompson singled up the middle and Achille walked to load the bases. After the second out, Welsh drew the RBI walk for the 1-0 WJU lead.

Chapman did the rest in the circle. The junior allowed two runners in the first six innings to reach third base, including a bottom of the third lead-off triple, but did not allow Lake Erie to score.

In the home seventh with two outs and two on, the Storm tried to take advantage of a Cardinals error, but their lead runner was gunned out at home, second baseman Morgan Stohlman to catcher Scott to end the game.

"It was a hard-fought game both ways. Our girls adapted to some challenges that were thrown our way and overcame them with such poise," added Pelegreen. "Great pitching from Mallory and a stellar performance by Vic (Scott) behind the plate picking off two people. We might have only pushed one run across the plate, but we had runners on base almost every inning and you can't be mad at that."

vs. Point Park

WJU wasted no time in scoring. In the top of the first, Holstein singled and stole second, before Michaela Miller walked. Thompson sacrificed both and Achille brought both home on her sacrifice for the 2-0 lead.

Three at bats later, the Cardinals added an insurance pair. With two outs, Scott singled and Taylor DiPerna pinch ran and advanced on a wild pitch. Courtney Rogers and Welsh drew walks, before Cramer lined her two-run hit.

Unterbrink did not need any more help. The sophomore fanned eight without a walk and allowed only two runners to touch third base.

"Our girls came out on fire in the second game. We pushed two runs across the plate early and really set a tone for us. Erin (Unterbrink) did outstanding on the mound and for the most part we were defensively sound," pointed out the Cardinals coach.

WJU is back on the Florida diamond on Monday when it plays Cleary University at 9 a.m. and Tiffin in an 11:30 a.m. contest.
