Cardinals Complete Volleyball Sweep of Hilltoppers

WHEELING, W.Va. – Starting the second round against select Mountain East Conference teams, Wheeling Jesuit completed a regular season sweep, 3-0, of rival West Liberty Tuesday night.
 
Leading 17-13 in the opening set, the Cardinals (17-4/8-0 MEC) ran off the final eight points behind three Maddy Smyth and two Kenzie Schroer kills for the 25-13 win. Again, WJU finished strong in the second set, but this time it was the final 10 points on the way to a 25-18 victory. Tied at 5-5 early in set three, the Hilltoppers (13-10/4-4 MEC) saw the Cardinals work their way to an 18-11 lead before the 25-17 final.
 
On the night, Cassie Meyer led WJU with 12 kills to go with eight digs, five total blocks, two aces and an assist. Smyth added 10 winners and six block assists. Haley Kramer chipped in eight kills and five blocks.
 
Stephanie Sylvester dished out 31 assists to go with eight digs and three blocks. Audrey Francis dug a match-high 22 digs, while Makenna Babb contributed 19 digs, four kills and two aces. Abby Moffit had 13 digs.
 
Caitlin Clarke and Raimey Benson paced West Liberty with eight and seven kills. Amanda Leonard had 17 assists.

The Cardinals won the opening matchup less than two weeks ago, 3-0, on Oct. 5.
 
WJU continues its home week with a Friday night, Oct. 20, match against West Virginia State starting at 7 p.m.
