Cardinals Wrestle No. 6 Lakers in Special WesBanco Match

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second time in program history, the Cardinals are in action on the WesBanco Arena wrestling mat. The Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team battle its eighth nationally-ranked opponent in No. 6 Mercyhurst in a dual match Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals (9-3) wrestle the powerhouse Lakers (5-3) in a 3:45 p.m. first bout start time. The WJU dual will be a preliminary match between sessions of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference high school championships semifinals also held in Wesbanco Arena.

"It will be pretty exciting to wrestle in front of the OVAC. The OVAC program supports us through attending our duals and camps. It will be a joy to perform in front of them," said WJU head coach Sean Doyle. "For us to be Mercyhurst, it would be a stepping stone for our program. In our program's progression, it is something we need to do."

• WJU went 1-1 last weekend on the road. The Cardinals suffered a loss at the Golden Knights of Gannon (22-13) last Saturday evening. Only 16 hours later, WJU rebounded behind heavyweight Maxwell Lacey's fall in the final bout for an upset of No. 15 Lake Erie College (22-19)

• Cardinals aim for their seventh win against nationally-ranked opponents. WJU is 6-2 versus the first eight.

• With a dual win, WJU will record its second 10-plus win season in a row – 11-6 a year ago – it currently has the third-straight nine-win campaign.

• Maxwell Lacey (285) earned the WJU Male Athlete of the Week award for his two victories, including the match-winning fall vs. Lake Erie College. He is now 16-8 on the season.

• Jake Donahue (125) has won all six of his matches in January dual matches

• Dominick Nania (149) is the first Cardinal wrestler to reach 20 wins this year at 20-6.
