Cardinals Return to Mat Against Golden Knights and No. 15 Storm

ERIE, Pa. & PAINESVILLE, Ohio – For the first time since it National Duals run, the Cardinals return to the mat this weekend. The Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team travels north for a pair of road duals at Gannon Saturday evening and Lake Erie College Sunday afternoon.

It will be a short turnaround for the Cardinals (8-2). WJU wrestles at Gannon (2-1) in its Hammermill Center Saturday night at 8 p.m. The Cardinals have less than 16 hours before they face the Storm of Lake Erie College (0-0) in a 2 p.m. Sunday match.

"They both will be really good matches," said WJU head coach Sean Doyle. "I expect them to come down to the end. Both Gannon and Lake Erie have both have rosters that could have been to the National Duals. It will be a good test coming off last week after an emotional two days at the National Duals."

• WJU comes off its biggest weekend in the program's four-year history. At the Mat Mahem National Duals, the Cardinals opened with upset wins over No. 8 Findlay (26-12) and No. 3 Maryville (Mo.) (18-17). WJU followed the first day with a third upset over No. 21 Colorado State Pueblo (22-21 on criteria), before it took No. 1 St. Cloud State (35-6) to stop the team's run.

• Freshman Jake Donahue recorded a 4-0 National Duals and was named the WJU Male Athlete of the Week. His weekend included a 6-2 decision over defending national champion and No. 1 rated Brett Velasquez.

• At 149, Dominick Nania went 3-1 as the other top National Duals performer. His lone defeat came to No. 1 ranked Nic Goebel of Findlay.
