WJU Women’s Swimmers Sweep, Men Split at Fairmont St.

Full Meet Results
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In the first pool action of 2017, the Cardinals touched the wall for some promising results. The Wheeling Jesuit women's swimming team swept past host Fairmont State and Bethany, while the men's team split its tri-meet Friday evening.

The WJU women claimed five first-place finishes of the 11 events to defeat the Fairmont State (116-79) and Bethany (153-36). Lucas Rhodes led the Cardinals men with a pair of first places as they defeated the Bison (148-35), but lost to the Falcons (102-98).

"The women dominated the entire meet, starting in the beginning finishing first in the 200 Medley relay, to freshman Regan Nolan and junior Kristin Beyerl taking second and third in the 1000 free," explained WJU head coach Jeani Humpe. "Reagan also finished first in the 500 free. The highlight of the meet was when Sloane Glover, Rachel Yontz, and Stefanie Boburka finished one-two-three in the 100 fly."

Anna Davis recorded a meet-best three top finishes. Davis was part of the meet-opening 200 medley relay team along with Yahia Farida, Glover and Boburka in a 1:59.63 time. She added individual wins in both the 50 free (26.78) and the 100 back (1:07.88).

In the Cardinals other top finishes, Glover claimed the 100 fly (1:05.16) and Nolan grabbed the 500 free (5:40.42). Along with her relay win, Farida added a second place in both the 200 IM (2:28.34) and 100 breast (1:12.48).

"The men had some great swims as well. In the 100 fly Vincent Zellin and Brett Dipuma, 500 free Lucas Rhodes and Tomas Caixeta finished first and second. Jake Braumbaugh also finished first in the 100 back," added Humpe. "Both teams swam really well considering they are still in winter training mode. I expect great things from them at the conference meet next month."

Rhodes had the best 500 free time (5:03.44), less than a second ahead of Caixeta (5:03.87). Rhodes also swam the anchor leg with Colton Claytor, DiPuma and Nick Friday for the top 200 free relay time of 1:32.78 to end the night.

Jake Braumbaugh had the fastest 100 back time of 54.18 and Vincent Zellin took the 100 fly (54.87). Caixeta recorded a trio of runner-up places in the 200 med relay (1:39.89), 200 free (1:48.57) and 500 free.

WJU returns to the pool next Friday in a dual meet at Malone University. First event starts at 6 p.m.
