Aitor ‘Hat Trick’ Takes Cardinals over Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – After trying relentlessly to score last Saturday, Aitor Iniguez de Heredia was the Cardinals' total offense Tuesday afternoon. Iniguez de Heredia's 'hat trick' propelled Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer over Concord, 3-2, in the Mountain East Conference opener.

Iniguez de Heredia found the net twice in six minutes (20:18 and 26:36) for the lead the visiting team would not give up.

"We played well in the first half and went up 2-0, but gave up a goal with two minutes left in the half, which changed the momentum (going into the half)," said WJU head coach James Regan. "In the second half, we were under pressure, but Aitor drew a penalty kick for us to go back ahead 3-1. We missed two good chances, but we withstood their pressure to win."

The Cardinals victory improves their early record to 2-1 and 1-0 in the MEC. The Mountain Lions are now 1-2 and 0-1 MEC.

Aitor took a pass from the top of the box from Micah Tatebe and finished his shot in the upper right corner of the net. The graduate student flicked Owain Hawkins' free kick and put past the Concord goalie for his second score.

Goalie Matt McCormick saved two Mountain Lions shots, but the WJU defense in front of him allowed only four shots on goal.

WJU returns home for a 5:30 p.m. Friday match against Shepherd University.
