WJU Rugby Prevails over Iona

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The new attitude and direction Cardinals men's rugby team continued its success Friday night. Wheeling Jesuit used a consistent game plan and prevailed over Iona University, 48-19, on a neutral site at Penn State.

Veteran WJU (4-1) players, Peter Malcolm and Allan Hanson each scored twice and guided the team to its fourth victory in a row.

"We played good consistent ball. On both sides (of the ball), we were very dominate in the scrums," said Cardinals head coach Tommy Duffy. "Bruce McLean had Iona very prepared. There was very hard rucking on both sides with the difference being that how consistent in the game plan and executed it well in the second half. Peter Malcolm had an outstanding match at hook and scored two tries."

The team did the majority of its damage in the second half after the Cardinals scored only three times in the opening half.

"In the second half, we played more consistent ball all around. At half, I told them to stay in our game and not to let Iona get inside their heads," added Duffy. "We just had to be consistent, clean and execute more efficiently, while varying the back play. Allan Hanson had a stellar match with two tries and his kicking kept pinning them back."

Wing player Killian Gause produced an outstanding match, while both Hugh McAllister and Auggie Murphy played with outstanding heart.

"It was truly a full 15-man effort, and if it wasn't for all 15 players believing in what we executed all week in practice, it could have been a different outcome. We just played Wheeling Jesuit Rugby," finished Duffy.

WJU stays on the road for another Friday night match next week, Sept. 30. The Cardinals face the Mountaineers of West Virginia University starting at 7:30 p.m.
