Griffins Edge Cardinals on Overtime Rebound

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – In a split second in the first overtime, Seton Hill's Curtis Gallagher knocked in a hard rebound off and helped his team edge Wheeling Jesuit, 2-1, in the men's soccer season opener Thursday night.

After trailing for 71 minutes, Cardinals' freshman Teavon Spencer headed in Owain Hawkins corner kick to tie the game, 1-1, with 6:35 left in the match. The Spencer goal turned the momentum heading into the extra period, but Seton Hill was able to capitalize on the first scoring opportunity for the game-winner.

"We had a lack of conversion on our set pieces all night as we have to produce more on those," said WJU head coach James Regan. "We adjusted to Seton Hill playing very direct and did well in the second half. When it comes to overtime anything can happen."

Spencer flew around the Griffins net all night in a very evenly played match. In his first collegiate match, he accounted for four of WJU's 10 shots and all three shots on goal.

Cardinals goalie Matt McCormick registered 10 saves on the night.

Seton Hill's Joe Smith blasted a 20-yard looping kick only 12:17 into the match for the opening goal.

The Griffins outshot the home team, 15-10, but the Cardinals had a 11-5 corner kick edge.

"We have to play tough and rebound for Saturday," added Regan.

WJU completes its home-opening weekend with a 1 p.m. contest against Bloomsburg.
