McGivern Run and Hudson Save Gives WJU Baseball Split at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Another extra-inning game and no problem. Brock McGivern raced home with the go-ahead 10th-inning run, before Cody Hudson enticed a bases-loaded double play as Wheeling Jesuit earned the Saturday baseball split at West Liberty.

The Hilltoppers (25-23/13-17 Mountain East Conference North) received a six-hit shutout, 9-0, from Mark Smyth in the opener. The Cardinals (16-26/15-15 MEC North) led for the middle five innings, before they need the extra-inning magic for the 4-3 victory.

The WJU game-two win gives it the inside track for the final MEC North Division playoff spot. With Sunday's series-ending doubleheaders set, WJU has a two-game lead on both West Liberty and Urbana, which plays at Notre Dame College.

The Cardinals need one win in Sunday's twinbill versus the Hilltoppers for their first MEC Championship Tournament berth. The doubleheader has a 1 p.m. first pitch at the JB Chambers Complex Baseball Field.

Anthony Connacher led the WJU offense with three game-two hits and a pair of RBI. Jagger Bruck singled twice in the opener and drove in one game-two run.

Logan Schickler doubled and singled. Adam Dennison drove in one late-game run with a single.

Game 1

West Liberty plated a pair of first-inning runs and never trailed.

Down 2-0, the Cardinals had their best scoring opportunity in the top of the third. Chris Minder lofted a leadoff single and stole second. McGivern ground out to put Minder at third base. Bruck singled and stole second, but the Hilltoppers' Smyth recorded the final two outs.

The home team iced the game with a six-run home sixth for the eventual 9-0 final.

Game 2

WJU took its first lead in the third inning with two scores. Chris Brake singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and Dennison drove him home to tie the game, 1-1. Connacher line a RBI hit and scored Dennison for a 2-1 lead.

West Liberty produced single tallies in the sixth and eighth innings to retie the contest, 3-3.

With two outs in the 10th, McGivern walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Connacher drove in his second runner of the game on the next WJU batter for a 4-3 lead.

After one out and one on base in the bottom of the 10th, Hudson took over on the WJU mound. He walked the next Hilltopper hitter and hit the second one to load the bases. The West Liberty momentum was stopped when Hudson enticed the ground ball to shortstop for the start of the game-ending double play.
