Edinboro Outlasts WJU, 11-8

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team fell to Edinboro University, 11-8, on Tuesday night. The Cardinals scored the first two goals of the afternoon, but were outlasted by the Fighting Scots down the stretch.

Elizabeth Hales put the Cardinals on the board first with a score with 27:58 remaining. Jessie Tufnell stretched the WJU lead to two scores with her goal at 20:33, but Edinboro rattled off the next four scores to take a 4-2 lead into the half.

Hales found the back of the net less than 30 seconds into the second half, and the Cardinals trailed by only one score, 4-3. Edinboro scored the next two goals, and took a 6-3 advantage.

Markie Wright scored her first goal of the afternoon with 25:48 remaining, and WJU trailed, 6-4. Hales fired another score and the Cardinals were down by only one score.

The Fighting Scots scored the next four scores to hold a 10-5 lead. However, WJU was not done fighting.

The Cardinals scored three goals in a 50 second stretch, and trailed by only two goals, 10-8. Hales added the Cardinals sixth score, while Kori Hickman added the seventh goal. Tufnell added her second score of the day to account for WJU's eighth and final score.

Despite the late Cardinals comeback, Edinboro would hold on for the 11-8 victory.

Hales continued to add to her MEC leading stat totals, as she scored four goals and handed out two assists on the afternoon. She also secured two groundballs. Tufnell, who was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week earlier today, finished with two scores and an assist.

Hickman and Wright accounted for the remaining WJU scores. Wright also grabbed a team-best three groundballs and caused three turnovers while Hickman caused one. Reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week Holly Deckert added one groundball and one caused turnover to her season totals. Goalkeeper Maire Austin saved 11 shots.

The Cardinals travel to South Euclid, Ohio for a 4 p.m. contest with Notre Dame College on Friday, April 8.
