Chapman Sac Fly and Pitching Keeps WJU Alive in MEC Softball Tourney

TROUTVILLE, Va. – Mallory Chapman kept Wheeling Jesuit alive in the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament Championship. Chapman lofted the game-winning sac fly and pitched 10 innings as the Cardinals outlasted the Falcons of Notre Dame College, 3-2.

After both teams scored a run in the eighth frame, Chapman scored Ali Smith with the winning run. The Cardinals stranded 13 runners on base and committed three costly errors and fell, 6-0, to Concord in the opening round contest.

WJU lined only 11 hits over 17 innings of Friday action. MEC Freshman of the Year Molly Welsh doubled and singled to lead the attack.

Cassie Holstein and Dana Achille both singled two times.

Chapman (18-10) logged all 17 innings in the WJU circle. Mallory allowed only three earned runs and 13 hits, while she struck out 13 hitters. The sophomore fanned eight Notre Dame College hitters over the 10-inning win.

Game 2 vs. Notre Dame College

In the home second, Smith led off with a single, before Mikaela Miller pinch ran. After a Chapman sac bunt, Achille brought home Miller on a sac fly and 1-0 lead.

The one-run WJU held up until the top of the seventh. Notre Dame's Maria Vanadia lined a two-out single and tied the game, 1-1.

In the eighth, the Falcons edged ahead, 2-1, with an unearned run after a Cardinals miscue.

Welsh led off the WJU eighth with a double to left field. Chapman sacrificed her to third, before Achille singled Welsh home for a 2-2 tie.

Game 1 vs. Concord

WJU stranded 13 runners over seven innings and posted only the third frame without leaving a runner on base against Concord.

The Mountain Lions took advantage of two Cardinals third-inning errors and plated three runs for the 3-0 lead.

Concord added three more top-of-the fifth-inning scores, two unearned, and opened a 6-0 difference.
