Tournament Central PSAC Eastern Division rivals Kutztown and West Chester will meet in the final game of the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.
Kutztown came out on top in each of the two previous meetings this season, but both victories came by less than 10 points. The two teams played in the final game of the regular season with the Bears edging the Golden Rams, 81-77. KU's Anthony Lee has led the Bears in scoring in each of the two previous meetings against West Chester scoring 23 and 16 points, respectively.
The Bears are making their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their first since 2010. This season also marks just the fourth 20-win season in school history, which helped head coach Bernie Driscoll earn PSAC East Coach of the Year honors. Kutztown is second in the PSAC in scoring with 84 points per game and has six players that average between 8-15 points per contest. KU was excellent on its home floor in 2015-16 posting a record of 14-1, but was just 7-5 away from Keystone Hall.
Junior forward Josh Johnson was the PSAC East Athlete of the Year after leading the team in scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg) and the PSAC East Division title. Lee shoots a team-best 58 percent from the floor and averages 13.1 points per game, and Ryan Connolly is the team's best perimeter threat knocking down a team-best 63 three-pointers on the year and averaging 12.7 points per game.
West Chester was nationally ranked beginning in January rising as high as 16th, and comes into the tournament ranked 21st in the NABC poll. Of course, two of the Rams' five losses this season have come against Kutztown. WCU has been in tight games down the stretch with each of its last four games being decided by 10 points or less.
The strength of the Rams is hitting the glass and getting to the free throw line.
West Chester is the best in the PSAC in offensive rebounds per game (14.6) and total rebound margin (+8.6). WCU is fifth in the NCAA in free throw attempts and 20th in free throws made. The Rams are one of only three teams in the PSAC to average more than 80 points per game (81.5).
Matt Wiseley earned first team All-PSAC East honors after averaging a double-double scoring 12.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Wiseley is seventh in the country in offensive rebounds getting 3.79 per game. Malik Jackson is the team's leading scorer contributing 15.9 points per game and has connected on a team-best 77 three-pointers this year. Avery Brown (10.8) and Matt Penacle (10.1) also are double figure scorers for West Chester.
