Cardinals Rally Falls Short, Close 1-0 Defeat to No. 5 Mo.-St. Louis

CLERMONT, Fla. – After two perfect days to open the season, Wheeling Jesuit rallied but fell short against Lake Erie College, 8-6, before it lost a close 1-0 final to No. 5 ranked Missouri-St. Louis.

Trailing 8-3, the Cardinals' (4-2) Rachel Conrad blasted a 3-run top-of-the-seventh homer, but it was not enough to overtake the Storm. In the second game, Mallory Chapman fanned 10 of the nationally-ranked Triton hitters and did not allow an earned run in a losing effort.

"We made some errors that didn't help us in the first game. We didn't come ready to play and it showed. Lake Erie took advantage of every opportunity we gave them. We did put up a fight at the end, but it wasn't enough," stated WJU head coach Kelli Williams.

The Cardinals' coach had a different take on game two, "The second game we played a great team in Missouri-St. Louis. Their pitcher did a great job of keeping our hitters off balance. We had our opportunities and couldn't connect. We played like a totally different team, and if we play like we did in the second game the rest of the year, we will all be very happy."

Kelci Thompson produced a 4 for 4 opener with a double, while Conrad added the 3-run homer and a game two single.

Molly Welsh doubled and singled twice and Cassie Stein lined three singles. Dana Achille her first home run of the year in game one.

After three days in a row, WJU has Wednesday off. The Cardinals return to action on Thursday with single games again Georgian Court (9 a.m.) and Felician (11 a.m.).

vs. Lake Erie College

The Storm stormed out of the gate in the home first with six runs on six hits for a 6-0 lead.
Welsh's RBI single put WJU on the scoreboard for a 6-1 tally after 1.5 innings.

Down 8-1 in the top of the fifth, Thompson doubled down the left field line and walked home on Achille's 2-run homer.

The score remained 8-3 until Conrad drove home both Holstein and Thompson, who both singled, for an 8-6 score. Lake Erie retired the next three WJU hitters for the 8-6 final.

vs. No. 5 Missouri-St. Louis

The No. 5 Tritons manufactured a second-inning run off a walk, passed ball, fielder's choice ground out for the game's lone run.

WJU's best-scoring chance came in the home fourth. Holstein led off with a single and Conrad added her own hit two batters later. Missouri-St. Louis recorded outs on the next two batters to end the threat.

Chapman struck out 10 hitters and allowed only two hits and no earned runs in the circle.
