No. 4 Cardinals Takes DII Men’s Basketball Marquee Matchup from No. 2 Falcons

WTOV Ch. 9 Game Highlights
WHEELING, W.Va. –
In the NCAA Division II men's basketball marquee matchup of the weekend, No. 4 Wheeling Jesuit finished strong in the final eight minutes and took down No. 2 Fairmont State, 91-82, Saturday afternoon.

Kyle Ritz powers up two of his 19 points
After a pair of Chase Lawson free throws tied the game at 63, Eric Siefert drained a trey and Kyle Ritz added a layup in the key seven-straight WJU point spurt. The Falcons' Matt Bingaya answered with a layup to make it 68-65 at 6:41, but the Cardinals held strong and finished off the nine-point win.

The Cardinals (22-1) victory, their 17th in a row, was their second home victory over a top two ranked team this season – they defeated then No. 1 ranked West Liberty (106-83) on Jan. 21. WJU also maintained sole possession of the Mountain East Conference's top spot with a 15-1 mark. Fairmont State dropped its second contest of the week and fell to 19-3 overall and 13-3 in the conference.

"It was a great team and hard-fought win. Fairmont State is very talented, well-coached and plays hard. We knew if we were going to win it would take great talent and execution on our part," explained WJU head coach Danny Sancomb.

The WJU defense played a big part in the game's outcome. The Cardinals held the Falcons to under 40-percent (23 of 58), forced 14 turnovers and won the rebounding battle (38-36.).

"We played great defense. I am very happy with how the team played defense the whole night," said Sancomb. "We didn't do do as well in the first half, but we did in the second half. Kyle Ritz play very well with hard defense, good rebounding and scoring."

Ritz connected on all seven of his floor attempts and tied teammate Pat Moseh with a team-best 19-point night. The junior forward also pulled down nine rebounds, six defensively, and assisted on two buckets.

"Pat (Moseh) and Eric (Siefert) do what they do. (Justin) Fritts made big shots, played stout defense and had an all-around game," added the Cardinals head coach.

Pat Moseh hit for 19 points

Moseh made 11 of 15 foul shots, including all eight in the second half, for his 19 points. Siefert downed a trio of treys and 6 of 10 from the floor for 17 points and handed out four assists.

Fritts made it four double-figure WJU scorers with 18 points, while he had four rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Despite a tough shooting night, Haywood Highsmith pulled down 11 rebounds and handed out a team-high five assists to go with his six points.

Bingaya led Fairmont State and all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 11 boards. Jamel Morris chipped in 18 poitns.

Fairmont State stormed out of the gate by hitting its first three 3-point attempts and had an 11-4 lead after 2:08 elapsed in the game. WJU answered with a 10-2 run for its first lead, 14-13, on two Highsmith free throws three minutes later.

The first half remained a one possession game with Fairmont State's Bingaya draining a 3-pointer for a 39-36 halftime lead.

With the first bucket, the Falcons made it a five-point margin, 41-36, and led 46-42. The Cardinals ran off a 13-2 run for the largest advantage of nine points, 55-46, at 14:34. Fairmont State rallied right back and regained the advantage, 58-57, with its own 12-2 run.

At 8:29, Bingaya gave what would be the Falcons last lead, 63-61. WJU made the next seven points and never trailed the final eight minutes.

Wheeling Jesuit remains at home for two home game next week. The Cardinals host the Cavaliers of The University of Virginia's College at Wise Thursday night, Feb. 11, in a 7:30 contest.
