BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - After guiding the WJU women's basketball team to a 2-0 weekend, Monica Burns earned the first MEC Player of the Week honors of the 2016-17 season.

Burns, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, led WJU in scoring in both contests. The Cardinals gathered victories over Edinboro and West Chester University while competing in the PSAC-MEC Challenge.

In WJU's victory over Edinboro, Burns hit six of 12 field goals including four of eight from three-point distance to score 21 points. She added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals to her total.

Burns also surpassed the 20-point plateau against the Rams on Sunday as she scored 21 points in just 26 minutes of action. The New Stanton, Pennsylvania native netted six of eight three-point attempts including a pair of treys within the opening minute of play.

Burns and the Cardinals open their home season Wednesday, November 16 when they host the Findlay University Oilers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
