Team Results
Full Brackets
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The good early season mat results continued Saturday. Wheeling Jesuit repeated as the Washington & Jefferson Invitational Team Champions Saturday, while the Cardinals' Nolan Whitely, Daniel Romero and Greg Brusco won individual titles.

In the final team standings, WJU earned the title by three points, 128.5 to 125.5 points, over Southern Maine. The Cardinals II team performed strong for fourth place with 103.5 points.

"We had a really good day today and I was very proud of the guys perseverance," said Sean Doyle, WJU head coach. "Entering an event without four guys (DJ Warner, Ryan Winslow, Terrance Fanning and Logan Bowman) that we expect to see at the national tournament is a tall task. To see our guys and notably our younger guys step up was awesome to see."

Two-time NCAA Qualifier Whitley (5-0) ran through the 133-pound weight class. The junior scored four decision victories, including a 9-4 win over Zach Bylykbashi of Washington & Jefferson for the title.

Daniel Romero (6-0) recorded a 5-0 day to his 141-pound title. The junior started with a major decision and followed it with four decisions with a 3-2 championship win over teammate Kollin Clark, 3-2.

Brusco (5-0) showed a strong 157-pound four victories. The freshman registered his first collegiate fall to begin his day and added a 15-0 tech fall to advance to the semifinals. Brusco won 1-0 in the semifinal, before he claimed the title with a 7-3 decision over Southern Maine's CJ Luth.

At 149, Dom Nania (4-1) won three-straight bouts, before he was edged 16-13 in a high-scoring affair against Dan Del Gallo of Southern Maine in the title match.

WJU has a week off before it competes at the University of Findlay Open next Saturday, Nov. 19.

Coach Doyle Notes:

The team competed in our first tournament of the year today at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. 14 teams competed and were permitted to enter more than one team if able. Today our 1st team took home the team title for the second year in a row but it wasn't easy. As the tournament came down to the final two bouts, we needed a bonus point victory from either Nate Starkey or Max Lacey to secure the team title. Nate responded with a tech fall over an opponent that tech falled him earlier in the day! Max responded with an overtime win over a regionally ranked wrestlers. Also, of note, our 2nd team took 4th place and wrestled very well.

Great teams are identified by how they respond to adversity and we were extremely proud of today's performance. We entered this tournament without the services of 4 wrestlers that are currently ranked in the region. With 4 of 10 starters out, the team showed great poise in bringing home the team title.

Special to congrats to individual champions Nolan Whitely (5-0), Daniel Romero (6-0) and Greg Brusco (5-0).
