WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit played the role of spoiler and upset No. 7-ranked Kutztown men's rugby Saturday afternoon, 33-20.
Team captain Hugh McAllister busted across the try line as time expired in the first half and the Cardinals ruggers never trailed again. The McAllister try gaveWJU a 14-10 lead heading into the intermission and started a run of 24-unaswered home points.
WJU (6-1) posted its sixth-straight victory and first ever against the ranked Kutztown contingent.
"It was a good, old-fashioned dogfight," said WJU Head Coach Tom Duffy. "Both teams came to play. We just put together a game plan, we thought would win, and we stuck to it."
Leading 33-20, the WJU defense stiffened against a charging Kutztown attack. The Golden Bears worked the ball inside the five-yardline twice, but were held out of the try zone and off the scoreboard over the final 12 minutes of action.
WJU received successful second-half tries by Peter Malcolm, Orrie Mann and Cullen Buckley and built its 29-point advantage, 33-14. Hanson added a pair of two-point conversions.
After the upset win, the Cardinals have their sights set on the biggest home match of the fall season. WJU hosts Army next Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15, in a 1 p.m. battle.
