Cardinals Have Tough Finale Against No. 6 Golden Eagles

WHEELING, W.Va. – With one of the toughest 'Senior Day' opponents, Wheeling Jesuit fell short of sending its veteran players out with a win as No. 6 Charleston claimed the match, 2-0, Saturday afternoon.

After two Golden Eagles (14-2-1/9-2-1 Mountain East Conference) goals in the first 33 minutes, the Cardinals (6-12/4-8 MEC) played even the rest of the way, but failed to convert opportunities.

"It was a tough loss on Senior Day," said WJU coach Jim Regan. "I thought we played a great second half after spotting them a 2-0 start. Senior goalie Matt McCormick had a great game keeping us within striking distance. Unfortunately, the late, missed chances took our wind out of our sails."

McCormick battled a 16-shot barrage and saved six of the eight put on goal.

The Cardinals put together their best series of chances from the 67th through 79th minutes of play. Aitor Iniguez de Heredia saw his kick saved at 67:14, before Brent Pedlow suffered the same fate less than a minute later (68:10).

After a foul in the box at 79:12, Jordan Frommeyer fired a penalty shot to the lower left of the goal only to have the Charleston keeper smother it at the last second and keep WJU off the scoreboard.

WJU had eight seniors – McCormick, Pedlow, Frommeyer, Shaan Stuart, Ricardo Luna, Will Rector, Daniel Undreiner and Christian Huffman – enjoy Senior Day pregame festivities. Graduate student de Heredia also played his final match.
