CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team fell to the University of Charleston, 68-58, Monday night. The Golden Eagles handed the Cardinals their first loss since November 15, as well as their first Mountain East Conference loss of the season.

Junior forward Lydia Hyburg paced the Cardinal offense on the night. The Delaware, Ohio native finished with 15 points on seven of eight shooting, while pulling in six rebounds in her 21 minutes of action.  Freshman Chenelle Moore and senior Jaila Bryant also finished with double-digit scoring. Chyress Lockhart led Charleston and all scorers with 29 points on the evening.

"Charleston outplayed us. Lockhart is a very good guard who can drive and shoot," head coach Debbie Buff expressed. "We did not have an answer for her. We need to bring more energy on the road, and we need to bring intensity against a very athletic West Virginia State team on Wednesday."

WJU (9-2, 4-1 MEC) trailed UC (4-7, 2-3 MEC) by one point after 10 minutes of play before taking a two-point lead into the half. The Cardinals finished the first half on a 5-1 run, including two of Hyburg's team high 15 points.

The two teams battled throughout the third quarter of play. UC regained and took the lead into the final quarter. The Golden Eagles were able to stretch their lead to as many as 13 points late in the fourth quarter as they went on to win the contest by 10 points.

Moore finished in double-digit scoring for the fourth consecutive game. The freshman forward netted 12 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals. Bryant contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Cassi Stein and Taylor Lubinsky each added six points to the Cardinal total. Lubinsky added three boards, while Stein collected one rebound and one steal.

WJU returns home Wednesday, January 6 for a conference match-up against West Virginia State University at 5:30 pm.
