WJU Strikes Early After Delay, Shuts out Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After an hour lightning postponement, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team struck twice in the opening 15 minutes and shut out Seton Hill, 2-0, in the season opener Thursday afternoon.

On the match's second shot, Danny Undreiner booted the season's first score from the top of the box at 8:25. WJU was not finished in the opening half as Trey Tucker beat both the Seton Hill defender and goalie and connected on the second goal for a 2-0 lead 14:32 into the game.

"It was a great team win! The guys had a great first half as we pressure them constantly," said WJU head coach James Regan. "We got two great finishes from Danny Undreiner and Trey Tucker in the first half and played solid defense in the second half to steal the win!"

The Cardinals claimed their second opening-match victory over the past two years. WJU also answered a 1-0 overtime home defeat to Seton Hill last Sept. 10, 2014.

With a 2-0 halftime advantage, the visitors turned away all eight Griffin second-half shots, including three put on goal and sealed the shutout. Cardinal goalie Matt McCormick stopped four shots and blanked the Griffins.

WJU was outshot overall, 13-9, and on corner kick attempts, 9-4.

Along with Undreiner and Tucker's shots on goal, Brent Pedlow added three and Vince Faraji one to complete the team's shots on net.

"This road win against a good team will give us confidence to build on," said Regan.

WJU finishes the tough first week of road contests on Sunday. The Cardinals play at the Rams of Philadelphia University in a noon match.
