WHEELING, W. Va. – Trailing by four runs, Wheeling Jesuit plated four two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh and won the opener on an
Anthony Connacher single for a 7-6 win over West Liberty. The Hilltoppers took advantage of four errors and powered two home runs for the win and split, 10-7.
Down 6-2 with the bases loaded and two out,
Dillon Sunnafrank lined a hard liner past the West Liberty (28-19/22-14) third baseman to for three WJU runs. Sunnafrank trotted home with the game-tying run on a wild pitch.
Brock McGivern drew a lead off walk, stole second and slide home safely on Connacher's single to shallow center field for the 7-6 Cardinal win.
The Cardinals (16-25/15-21 MEC) scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings to lead 4-2. The Hilltoppers edged ahead, 6-4, with third hits capped by a two-run Anthony Pierro single past a diving Cardinal third baseman. West Liberty never gave up the lead over the final three frames.
Joe San Felippo paced Wheeling Jesuit's hitting. The sophomore went 5-for-6 with a solo home run, four RBI and three runs. Connacher added a 4-for-6 performance with three runs and the game-winning RBI. Sunnafrank chipped in four singles. McGivern and Chris Brake contributed two hits apiece.
For West Liberty, Jordan Meyer lined four hits, including a two-run Homer in the opener. Tim Hughes belted a two-run round-tripper and Tim Mirandy a solo shot in the late contest.
