AVON, Ohio – Patrick Ammar's sixth-inning lead-off double and score on a balk helped Wheeling Jesuit earn a Friday baseball split at Notre Dame College. The Cardinals secured the game one win, 2-1, with Ammar's run, before the Falcons took the late contest, 6-0.
Ammar registered three of WJU's 10 hits in the twinbill. He was 2-for-2 with a double and a run in the opener.
Brock McGivern and
Dillon Sunnafrank lined two singles apiece.
Benjamin Standiford and Antonio Acierno held Notre Dame College to three hits in the victory. For his first mound victory of the season, Standiford (1-3) went the first five innings where he allowed three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Acierno pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit for the save.
Wheeling Jesuit moved to 7-14 overall and 6-10 in the Mountain East Conference. Notre Dame College is now 11-7 and 11-5 in the MEC.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
Game 1 Leading off the game, McGivern started the Cards' offense with a lead-off single to right. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Falcon error. Ammar brought McGivern home on a single up the middle for a 1-0 WJU lead.
Notre Dame College tied the game, 1-1, in the third frame when designated hitter Blake Miller lofted a sac fly.
In the top of the sixth, Ammar led off with a doubled to left center.
Tyler Kowalczyk moved Ammar to third on a sac bunt. Two hitters later, Ammar scored on a Notre Dame College balk to put Wheeling Jesuit ahead, 2-1.
In relief, Acierno shut the door on the Falcons over the final two home at bats to complete the 2-1 Cardinals win.
Game 2 Wheeling Jesuit could not take advantage of its early-game hits. The Cardinals lined two hits in each of the first two innings and another in the third, but failed to score.
Notre Dame College pushed across one run in the bottom of the second. Andrew Hurd hit a sac fly to drive home TJ Lett, who tripled, for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage.
The Cardinals managed only a Sunnafrank fifth-inning lead-off single over the final four at bats to fall, 6-0, in game two.
