Wheeling, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling program has been on a steady climb from the time Head Coach
Sean Doyle began the program two years ago. Wheeling Jesuit just recently climbed to the #6 ranking in the latest Super Region I rankings. The Cardinals entered Friday night's match against UPJ on a 4 match winning streak and an 8-2 overall record.
Pitt-Johnstown came into the match with a 6 game winning streak and ranked 4
th in the Super Region I rankings. A perennial NCAA Division II power, the Mountain Cats are currently ranked #19 in the country.
The highly anticipated meeting between these two teams was one-sided. Wheeling Jesuit saw the face of the team it hopes to become. Pitt-Johnstown won 9 of the 10 matches to win 28-6 and hand the Cardinals their third defeat of the season
The lone bright spot of the evening was a flash of brilliance by sophomore wrestler
Dominick Nania. Nania pinned UPJ's Kevin Synanin in 13 seconds, registering a win by fall and the only WJU points of the night.
It is remarkable that WJU's Wrestling program has come as far as it has in just two years of existence. Thursday night's match is proof that there is more left to be done for the young Cardinals.
Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling gets back on the mat this coming Thursday February 5
