WJU Women's Basketball Surges Past Shepherd in Second Half

WHEELING, W.Va. – After being down by as many as 12 points, Wheeling Jesuit surged past Shepherd University in the second half for a 73-68 victory and stayed perfect in the Mountain East Conference.

Down by eight at intermission, the Cardinals (6-1/4-0 MEC) outscored the Rams (2-6/1-3 MEC) by 10 points in the third quarter, 23-13. WJU kept the pressure on and made it a 10-point advantage, 58-48, before a pair of Jaila Bryant, who netted a team-high 20 points, sealed the win with two free throws with 14 seconds left.

"It was a great second half for us," noted WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We got off to a slow start against a skilled Shepherd team. They shot well in the first half. In the second half, we switched up defenses and played with more energy."

Bryant kept the Cardinals running in the first half where she scored 15 of her 20 points. On the afternoon, the senior made 7-of-14 attempts to go with four rebounds and a pair of assists.

Jaana Motton logged a double-double with 13 rebounds and 14 points. The junior forward was key for the home team to outrebound Shepherd, 45-31, in the contest.

Mariah Callen added 11 points, including sinking all six of her free throws. Kylie Frizell chipped in 10 points and grabbed seven boards off the bench.

Wheeling Jesuit will have the next nine days off before it plays on Monday, Dec. 14, at Clarion University. Tip-off set for 6 p.m.
