WJU Rated No. 4 in Opening Super Region I Poll

NEWBERRY, S.C. – After the first month of the 2015-16 season, the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team earned the No. 4 ranking in D2Wrestle.com NCAA Division II Super Region I poll released Tuesday.

The Cardinals rate behind top 10 rated teams Mercyhurst, Notre Dame College and Pitt-Johnstown. WJU sits 5-0 in dual matches, including a resounding 32-6 win over West Liberty and won the Washington & Jefferson Invitational team title by over 80 points.

WJU has half of its 10 starters in the top 5 rated wrestlers of their weight classes. At 125 Dustin Warner is the No. 1 ranked grappler. The sophomore has a 13-0 record and won individual titles at both the Washington & Jefferson Invitational and University of Findlay Open.

Sophomore Preston Bowsher (141) rates second with an 11-2 early season record. The third super sophomore, Nolan Whitely ranks third at 133 with a 12-1 record.

The two juniors, Dominick Nania (149) and Sawyer Leppla (184), are No. 5 in their weight classes. Nania holds a 10-1 record and Leppla is 3-2.

WJU returns to dual match action on Friday night, Dec. 4, at Alderson Broaddus. First bout begins at 7 p.m. The Cardinals open their home dual season this Sunday, Dec. 6, against Ohio Valley at 1 p.m.
