WHEELING, W.Va. - Jaila Bryant knocked in three free throws with less than a second remaining on the scoreboard to lead the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team past Mountain East Conference opponent Notre Dame College, 73-72, Monday night.
The Cardinals (4-1, 2-0 MEC) stretched their fourth quarter lead to eight before the Falcons (2-3, 0-2 MEC) rallied to take a two point lead, 72-70, with four seconds remaining. Bryant was fouled just before time expired, and she went on to make all three of her free throw attempts, securing the Cardinal victory.
"We talked throughout our game preparation that Notre Dame was a very talented and veteran team," head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We knew it would come down to rebounding, poise, and making our free throws."
The Falcons took a 38-37 lead into the half. The Cardinals took a six point lead in the third quarter when Mariah Callen made a three pointer. The two teams continued to battle back and forth.
The Cardinal lead grew to eight off a Jaila Bryant layup with 5:18 remaining. The Falcons tied the game with 32 seconds left, and went ahead by two off a Martha Nagbe jumper with four seconds remaining.
Bryant netted her three free throw attempts after being fouled with four tenths of a second remaining, and the Cardinals won the contest 73-72.
The Cardinals were able to outrebound the Falcons 39-24 in the contest as they tallied 17 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. They also attempted 18 free throws compared to the Falcons four attempts.
Bryant led all scorers with 19 points on the night. She added seven boards, five assists, and two steals to her total. She was seven of 10 from the free throw line, including the last three points of the game.
Freshman Chenelle Moore provided the Cardinals with a huge boost off the bench. The Westerville, Ohio native notched a double-double in just 18 minutes of play. She finished the evening with 16 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.
Mariah Callen turned in another solid performance for the Cardinals as she netted 12 points and secured four rebounds. Kylie Frizell contributed 11 points and two assists off the Cardinal bench.
Forward Jaana Motton finished the game with seven points and seven boards in 32 minutes of play. Cassi Stein added four points, while freshman Damonique Patterson and senior Taylor Lubinsky each added two points.
The Cardinals return to action on December 3 when they travel to Fairmont State University.
