Vulcans Turn Back Cardinal Men’s Soccer

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – For the second time in as many matches, the Cardinals found it tough to find the back of the net. California University of Pennsylvania knocked in a rebound and converted a free kick to register a 2-0 men's soccer win over Wheeling Jesuit Wednesday night.

The Cardinals (5-5-1) saw Aitor de Heredia attempt two first-half and two more shots with the final one on goal in the opening 13 minutes of the second half, but came up empty. The host Vulcans (6-4) saw Elliot Taylor touch in a rebound at 32:57 and Jesse
Sheirer add an insurance goal in the 62nd minute for the match's only two scores.

"We are struggling to score goals and we lost mental sharpness in the final third and final product tonight," said WJU head coach James Regan.

Ricardo Luna (65:10) Jordan Frommeyer at both 78:34 and 82:19 had their shots saved by the Vulcan netminder. Manny Del Rio fired one last WJU shot, which was saved by the Cal defense to preserve the 2-0 shutout.

Both Cardinal goalies, Mathew McCormick and Tyler Shotwell, saved two California shots on goal.

California outshot WJU, 13-10, but the visitors finished with an 8-6 second-half advantage.

WJU returns to Mountain East Conference action on Friday, Oct. 9, in a 7 p.m. match at West Virginia Wesleyan.
