Cardinals Handle Falcons, Remain Perfect in MEC

WHEELING, W.Va. – It was a clash and a real test between the Mountain East Conference's two best volleyball teams Saturday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit was able to handle a tough Fairmont State crew, 3-0, and stay perfect in MEC action.
 
The Falcons (16-7/8-2 MEC) pushed the host No. 6 Cardinals (23-3/10-0 MEC) almost to the first-set limit, before bowing, 25-21. WJU came back for 25-15 and 25-21 second and third set wins and completed its 18th win in a row.
 
Emma Schleucher and Kayce Krucki pounded 28 kills, 14 apiece, and combined to hit .436 for top Cardinal frontline honors. Setter Andrea Thobe posted her ninth 40-plus assist match with 45 to go with seven digs, an ace and one kill.
 
WJU makes the trek over the hill to play MEC rival West Liberty Tuesday night. The match is set for 7 p.m.

In the sets…
In a tight opening set, the Falcons tied the match at 18. Schleucher had the WJU answer from there. The junior killed the next two points and the Cardinals never lost the advantage in the 25-21 win.
 
Leading 8-7, Krucki and Haley Kindall killed points and Sam Obringer served an ace to help give WJU a bit of separation, 12-7, in the second set. The home lead grew to eight points three times (18-10, 20-12 and 21-13), before the 25-15 final.
 
Fairmont State held strong in the third set again. The Falcons battled to within three points, 23-21, before they had a service error and a Cardinal ace by Schleuchler to end the match, 25-21.
