Jesuit Women’s Basketball Goes on 23-5 Run in Second Half to Down UVA Wise 56-49

Box Score Wise, Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit University Women's Basketball team went on a 23-5 run at the end of the game to defeat UVA Wise 56-49 on the road in Mountain East Conference play.

UVA Wise led by four at the half and stretched that lead to 11 points at 10:41 of the second half.  But Wheeling Jesuit battled all the way back to tie the game 49-49 at the 2:35 mark of the second half on a Jaila Bryant jumper in the paint.  Sophomore guard Kylie Frizell hit a 3 pointer at 1:59 to go ahead 52-49 and the Cardinals never looked back.

Bryant led the Cardinals with 14 points and five rebounds.  Frizell went 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, finished with 13 points, and added a block and two steals.

Defensively, sophomore forward Jaana Motton turned in her strongest performance of the season.  Motton finished the game with 13 total rebounds, three blocks, and two steals, while adding 8 points of her own.

Wheeling Jesuit dominated play inside the paint.  WJU had 32 points in the paint to UVA Wise's 14.  The Cardinals were more opportunistic than their opponent as well.  Jesuit converted 11 UVA Wise turnovers into 15 points, while UVA Wise converted only 9 of 11 Wheeling Jesuit turnovers.  Finally, Wheeling Jesuit outshot UVA Wise from the field 44% to 27.9%.

"At the end of the game, I told the team that this was the gutsiest performance I have seen our team play since I came to Wheeling Jesuit.  This team understands when one player goes down others have to rise to the challenge.  I was proud of how we handled the adversity placed in front of us tonight," stated Head Coach Deb Buff.

The victory moves Wheeling Jesuit's overall record to 5-3.  The Cardinals are now 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference.

The Cardinals continue their road swing and return to action with another Mountain East Conference game against the Mountain Lions of Concord University on Monday January 5th at 4pm.
