Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – Head Coach Danny Sancomb and the Wheeling Jesuit Men's Basketball program hosted Notre Dame College in the second game of the day at Wheeling Jesuit.
Notre Dame's Lawrence DeArmond and Kyuata Teylor hit double digits in the first half as Notre Dame College took a 9-point lead into the intermission, 35-26.
Freshman forward
Haywood Highsmith was the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 9 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Notre Dame outshot WJU 35.3% to 33.35% in the first half. The difference in the first 20 minutes of the game was foul shots. Notre Dame made all five of its attempts from the foul line, while Jesuit connected on only 1 of 5 from the charity stripe.
The second half opened with a 12-0 run for the Cardinals. An
Eric Siefert 3-pointer and a
Justin Fritts three-pointer, two trips down the court later, pulled the Cardinals to within 3. After another Notre Dame miss and an aggressive rebound by
Tim Goff, the Cardinals came down court and Siefert hit his second three-pointer of the first three minutes of play to tie the game at 35.
The teams battled with the lead changing multiple times. Jesuit pulled away from Notre Dame at the 10:33 mark.
Kyle Ritz hit 1 of 2 foul shots to put the Cardinals up by 6. The Falcons then converted two Jesuit turnovers to pull within 2 with 9:25 left.
Both teams traded blows down the stretch. A pair of Notre Dame foul shots by Will Vorhees tied the game at 60 with 7:06 left to play. After a scramble for the ball and a timeout called by Head Coach Danny Sancomb at the bench, Siefert connected on a three-pointer that put the Cardinals ahead 63-60.
The Cardinals pushed it to 64-60 by making 1 of 2 foul shots with 4:47 left. Fritts hit two foul shots at the 3:21 mark to put WJU ahead by 6. After Notre Dame connected on 1 of 2 foul shots on their end of the court,
Haywood Highsmith hit 1 of 2 foul shots on the Wheeling Jesuit side of the court to keep pace.
With 1:38 left in the game, Wheeling Jesuit led 67-61 with possession of the ball after a Notre Dame miss. Siefert was fouled on the inbounds and made 1 of 2 foul shots to put Jesuit up by 7.
Notre Dame missed on its next trip down the court and Siefert was fouled again by the Falcons. Siefert hit 1 of 2 again to put WJU up by 8. The game became a foul fest. The Cardinals hit 9 of 10 foul shots down the stretch to beat the Falcons 78-69.
Fritts finished the game with 22 points, hitting 4 of 8 three-pointers and 6 of 6 from the foul line. Siefert had 18 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. Highsmith finished with 14 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals.
The win improves the Men's Basketball overall record to 9-7 and 5-6 in the Mountain East Conference. Jesuit Men's Basketball returns to action when they travel to Urbana, Ohio this coming Thursday January 29
th for another Mountain East Conference contest.
