Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – The Jesuit Men's Basketball team played #23 Glenville State today in the second game in the McDonough Center this afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit took Glenville State to the wire before losing a heartbreaker, 64-63.
The first half was a see-saw battle with Jesuit holding a slight advantage in shooting percentage 47.8% to 40% and rebounds 15 to 12 over Glenville State. In almost every other statistical category the numbers were right down the middle.
Sophomore forward
Kyle Ritz led the Cardinals in the first half with seven points and eight rebounds. Junior guard
Justin Fritts hit a three-pointer with :04 left to send the Cardinals into the locker room ahead 30-26.
As the game progressed in the second half each team finished the game gaining the lead four times. Ritz tied the game at 60 on a layup with 3:28 left in the game. Jesuit took the lead 63-60 on a
Desi Wiseman three-pointer with 2:41 left. Glenville State's Brett Morris made a shot in the paint with 2:22 left to pull within one, 63-62. After a WJU turnover at 2:04, Glenville State's Reggie Williams hit a jumper to make it 64-63 Glenville State. Williams finished the game with 19 points for the Pioneers, 17 of which came in the second half.
With 48 seconds left Glenville State's Brett Morris missed a jumper, got his own rebound, and gave the Pioneers another shot clock to work with. Then with 14 seconds left, Glenville State guard Sedric Nady missed a three-pointer to give Wheeling Jesuit an opportunity.
Jesuit got the ball up past half court and called a timeout to set up the final play of the game. With 5 seconds left,
Justin Fritts missed a three-point attempt and the Glenville State Pioneers escaped with a victory 64-63.
The loss brings Wheeling Jesuit's overall record to 6-6 and 2-5 in the Mountain East Conference. Jesuit plays two games on the road this week as they continue their Mountain East Conference schedule. WJU plays West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm and then travels to Shepherd University next Saturday, January 17
th for a 4pm tipoff.
