Box Score Wheeling, WVa. – #9 Wheeling Jesuit University Volleyball hosted the University of Charleston Golden Eagles on Friday night. The Cardinals pushed their record to 9-1 on the season with a sweep in three straight sets 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.
In the first set, Jesuit mixed a number of new faces into the rotation. Sophomore defensive specialist
Samantha Obringer, senior middle
Rachel Caja, freshman outside hitter
Maddy Smyth, and sophomore middle
Katie Campbell all played significant roles in the first set victory. The Golden Eagles had 10 unforced errors as WJU ran away with the first set 25-12.
In the second set, the Cardinals led by as many as 13 points as Charleston struggled to keep pace.
Samantha Obringer played libero most of the second set tallying 11 total digs on the night, while
Corrin Early contributed defensively at the back right position. Sophomore setter
Andrea Thobe set the ball for six different players in the set, before sophomore setter
Julie Henderson relieved her late in the set. Smyth led the Cardinals to another 25-12 set victory. Smyth had four dominant kills in the set.
In the third set, sophomore middle
Haley Kindall got Jesuit off to a fast start tallying the Cardinals second, third, and fourth point of the set. Smyth would take over from there with 3 kills of her own and finished the contest with 12 total kills. Junior right side
Alexa Brown and Henderson gained valuable experience as WJU finished the set and match 25-16.
Impressive is the fact that WJU was able to mix rotations and stay in phase, hitting .361 as a team on the night. 14 different players went into and out of the rotation as Wheeling Jesuit came away with a dominant three-set sweep of the Golden Eagles.
Jesuit is back in action tomorrow in a tri-match with the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State and the Pioneers of Point Park University. WJU takes on West Virginia State at 1pm. Point Park University and West Virginia State will square off at 3pm. Wheeling Jesuit will then finish against Point Park University at 5 pm.
