Box Score Wheeling, WVa. – The Women's Soccer program returned home on Wednesday night to play the Blue Knights of Urbana University. Even though the Cardinals had their chances, the game ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with Urbana registering 10 shots to Wheeling Jesuit's four.
It was much of the same in the second half as both teams held to their defensive style of play. At the 11:45 mark of the second half senior forward
Allison Geary hit the top of the crossbar that would have put the Cardinals ahead. But the shot careened off the goal and went out of bounds. At the 32:30 mark, Wheeling Jesuit had a 2 on 1 odd man rush, but
Allison Geary missed the touch and the score remained tied 0-0. Then at the 36:30 mark, senior
Caitlin Tomczyk had a great attempt that the Urbana goalkeeper barely saved to yield a corner kick.
In the first overtime,
Aubrey Hutchinson had a breakaway that resulted in the Urbana defender grabbing her jersey to slow her down in the box. Hutchinson made it through the hold, took a shot on goal, but could not put it past the Urbana goalkeeper. There was no foul called on the play and the game continued on.
In the second overtime, junior defender
Kristin Eaton had a free kick with 2 minutes remaining that squirted through the goalmouth, but went just left.
The tie brings the Women's Soccer team's record to 0-2-2 on the year. The Lady Cardinals return to action this Saturday on Bishop Schmitt Field at 3:30 pm in another Mountain East Conference match against Shepherd University.
