WJU Women’s Soccer loses to Notre Dame College 2-1

Box Score The Wheeling Jesuit Women's Soccer team travelled to South Euclid, OH on Saturday to open their Mountain East Conference play with Notre Dame College.  Despite a strong performance, the Lady Cardinals fell short losing 2-1.

Wheeling Jesuit scored first on a corner kick that bounced out from the goalmouth.  A Notre Dame College defender tried to clear the ball, but sophomore midfielder Morgan Jacobson knocked it down and scored a goal at the 12:20 mark of the first half.

Two controversial calls gave penalty kick opportunities to Notre Dame College.  The first came on a play where the defender from Wheeling Jesuit was pulled down in front of the goal, but the penalty kick was awarded to Notre Dame College.  Notre Dame College's Alexis Manoa scored on the penalty kick at 30:48 of the first half to pull even with the Cardinals, 1-1.

Play went back and forth in the second half.  Wheeling Jesuit turned in a strong defensive performance as Holly Kraus stood strong in goal and made nine saves for the Lady Cardinals.

The second penalty kick resulted on a hand ball charged against junior forward Aubrey Hutchinson.  Hutchinson had her arms tucked tightly against her body to protect herself against a free kick in front of the goal.  The ball touched her forearm on the ensuing free kick as Notre Dame College's player drilled the ball low hitting Hutchinson.

Alexis Manoa scored on the penalty kick at 78:59 of the second half to give the Notre Dame College Falcons the lead and win 2-1.

The Women's Soccer program returns to action at home on the new synthetic surface of Bishop Schmitt Field this Wednesday night, September 17th, against Urbana University.  Game time is set for 5pm.
