No. 11 Cardinals win in straight sets over UIndy

Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit University Volleyball program continued its string of competition against national opponents when it hosted the University of Indianapolis on Wednesday night in the McDonough Center.

In the first set, Wheeling Jesuit jumped out quickly on the visiting Greyhounds and pushed to a 15-11 lead.  Emma Schleucher and Haley Kindall provided the fireworks at the net.  Kindall finished the night with a .333 hitting percentage and 15 kills, while Schleucher added 11 kills and four blocks.  But, Indianapolis battled back and capitalized on two Cardinal service errors to even the set in a 24-24 deadlock.  WJU dug deep and rallied to win the set 27-25.

The second set started with the Cardinals jumping out to a 4-0 lead as Indianapolis struggled to keep pace.  WJU's Emma Schleucher served four straight times with one ace to get the Cardinals off to a lead they would not relinquish in the set.

Indianapolis put up a fight in the final frame staying even with the Cardinals to a 9-9 tie.  Then Jessica Thobe put the Cardinals out in front 11-9 on an ace and a serve that was too hard to handle for the Greyhounds.  The Cardinals would never look back.  Emily Blank came up big with a kill that put the Cardinals ahead 15-11 and then had a crucial block to widen the lead to 18-13.  Two big serves by Emma Schleucher after Indianapolis called a timeout to stave off the inevitable and the game was in hand.

The Cardinals finished the match in three sets 27-25, 25-17, 25-20.

"It was a good team effort tonight.  Our ball control was very good and we were able to do a lot of things at the net that we wanted to try and get a number of players involved in the action.  We were able to do so because we controlled the ball very well tonight," stated Head Coach Christy Benner

"Indianapolis is a great team that will be very good in their region.   It is nice to get a win against a team that is consistently in the Top 25 nationally," added Benner.

Wheeling Jesuit returns to action this Friday against Lock Haven University when it will play host to the Wheeling Jesuit University Invitational that will feature 4 games on Friday and Saturday in the McDonough Center.
