Cardinals Fall to Bobcats

Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team took the court Saturday against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan University.  The two teams faced each other earlier in the season in Wheeling, where the Bobcats beat the Cardinals 78-74.

The Bobcats came out of the gate with all cylinders firing, managing to take an early 16 to 6 lead. The lead was then stretched to 27 to 10. At the end of the first half, the score was 36 to 18 in favor of the Bobcats.

At the half, the Cardinals were led by senior guard Andre Harris, who netted five points. The Cardinals committed nine turnovers in the first half, causing them to fall behind to the Bobcats. Brett Ervin turned in 11 points at the half for the Bobcats.

WJU came out in the second half attempting to cut into the eighteen point Bobcat lead. The Cardinals managed to cut the lead to 12 with sixteen minutes remaining, off of a made three pointer by freshman guard Chase Lawson.

With ten minutes to play in the contest, freshman forward Matt Stewart netted a layup, cutting the lead to seven. The Cardinals appeared to have found a rhythm. However, the Bobcats responded by scoring six straight points, raising the lead back to 13.

The Cardinals went on to fall by a score of 47-62. With this loss, the Cardinals fall to 14-11 on the year, and 11-10 in the Mountain East Conference.

Andre Harris led the Cardinals with nine points and ten rebounds. Freshman forward Kyle Ritz turned in eight points and twelve rebounds, while Matt Stewart and Chase Lawson tallied seven points each.

The Cardinals return to action when they travel to West Liberty University on Saturday, March 1. The Women's game begins at 2, with the men's game to follow.
