Jesuit Wins 8 of 10 Wrestling Matches against Alderson-Broaddus

WHEELING — Sean Doyle admitted he was pleased with what he saw from his Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team during its opening dual match Wednesday evening at the McDonough Center.
But, he's not ready to throw any sort of parties, despite watching his Cardinals win eight of the 10 contested matches and post a 34-10 victory against Alderson-Broaddus before a loud and boisterous crowd.
"We wrestled hard and won eight matches, so we did well in that regard," Doyle said. "For our first match of the year, we wrestled well and can't be disappointed about that."
The Cardinals, who opened last weekend at Washington & Jefferson, will get back in the practice room for a couple of days before embarking on a tournament at Mount Union this weekend.
"There are a lot of areas where we need to improve, which is why I am not through the roof happy, but we will get better because of this dual ... that's for sure," Doyle said.
The Cardinals came out of the gates smoking. They won the first five matches of the dual, including a pin to start things at 285 pounds by Corey Siegfried at the 6:39 mark.
That set the stage for a trio of highly regarded freshmen that Doyle's been especially high on since they set foot on campus.
Claymont High graduate Dustin Warner — a Division II state champion last season — was a 6-2 winner at 125 pounds. Nolan Whitely was an 8-6 victor at 133.
One of the most impressive wins of the night was posted by Preston Bowshier, who recorded a pin just 29 seconds into the match at 141 pounds.
Skyler Terrell snagged a 6-5 decision at 149 pounds, heading into the intermission.
"We felt good about the first five and then we drew heavyweight (as the starting weight), which we felt good about, too," Doyle said. "We had some guys weigh in light and bump up. They ended up getting great wins from those guys, which are really encouraging."
One of those was was by Reyse Wallbrown. The true freshman bumps up to 165 and posted an 8-7 overtime win against the Battlers' Logan Shurina.
The lone former OVAC product in the lineup was also impressive. Cambridge High graduate Sawyer Leppla — a former all-Ohioan — was a winner by a 13-2 major at 184 pounds.
"The guys looked good, they were energetic and we had a good crowd, which we hope to continue to build on," Doyle said.
The Cardinals actually could have had nine wins on the evening. At 157 pounds, Dominick Nania was in control of A-B's Keith Stednitz, but made a mistake and ended up getting pinned at the 4:49 mark.
"You feel every guy's pain, so that (157-pound) match really makes you hurt," Doyle said. "Dom was going to win that match, but he got into a bad position and got pinned. Leaving here, that kind of stinks because you feel that pain."
