Box Score Charleston, W.Va. – On a beautiful November day at Schoenbaum Stadium, Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer team took on the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, ranked #1 in the nation, for the MEC Conference Title. The game started at a feverish pace as both teams raced to impact early in the game.
As the game settled in, both teams tried to create a style of play that they were comfortable with. The Golden Eagles chose taking possession and combining through the midfield and the Cardinals chose playing gritty, high work rate, counter attacking soccer.
Although the UC Golden Eagles held a 7-2 shot advantage at the break, the bulk of the play was in the midfield. Neither team created dangerous opportunities to challenge the goalkeepers. The score going into the half remained a 0-0 deadlock.
As the second half got underway, the game stretched more end to end. The Golden Eagles had an early header attempt go wide. On the opposite side, the Cardinals blasted a shot over the crossbar after collecting the ball on a poor clearance.
Finally, in the 69
th minute, Will Roberts served a driven ball inside the 6 yard box on a corner kick and Jake Young finished a header from point blank range to break the deadlock. The Cardinals in one last effort sent every player, including Senior Goalkeeper
Cody Thompson into the box on a free kick opportunity with 10 seconds left to play, but came up short.
As it turned out, that was all the Golden Eagles needed as the game ended in heartbreaking fashion for the Cardinals - final score 1-0.
Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer team is now finished with MEC Conference play, but will await a bid for further post-season play in the NCAA or ECAC Tournament.
