Box Score Athens, W.Va. -- On a brisk fall day, the Wheeling Jesuit University Women's Soccer team took on host and MEC Conference opponent Concord University Mountain Lions. The game was fraught with heavy conference tournament implications and the game did not disappoint.
The game started off at a very high pace, racing end to end as teams got used to the wet, muddy playing surface. A great chance was created early as forward
Aubrey Hutchinson drove towards the Mountain Lions goal and whipped the ball sharply to the back post, narrowly missing. After a few long-range efforts by the opponents, the Cardinals created another chance as a ball was crossed from the flank in front of the goal, but was missed by crashing runners in the 18-yard box.
As the game settled in, the pace slowed a bit, as both teams went into the halftime break with a 0-0 score line.
As the second half got underway, and the playing surface got slick, the game got sloppy as both teams went with a more direct playing style. Many of these attacks were squandered by the defenses, but a few good chances came.
Concord got on the board first at the 78
th minute mark, as Emily Cole broke through the WJU defense and got a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper
Holly Kraus. As Kraus came off her line, she blasted a shot high into the goal, just underneath the crossbar.
After the goal, WJU started an offensive onslaught, creating one chance after another. It took the final chance of the game, on a corner kick with 10 seconds left, for the Cardinals to equalize. Center back
Natalie Indermuhle headed home a cross to the back post from midfielder
Caitlin Tomczyk. The game went into overtime 1-1.
In overtime, the Cardinals dominated both 10 minute periods but came up short after missing a few more solid chances. The game went final at 1-1.
