Box Score Athens, W.Va. -- In the second leg of the soccer double header on the campus of MEC Conference opponent Concord University Mountain Lions, the Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer team started fast and struck first.
In the 20
th minute, Cardinal defender
Sean Murphy made a run into the attack, collected a bouncing ball from 30 yards out and drilled a shot at the opponent's goal. It likely had the goalkeeper beat, but took a friendly deflection on its way, beating the Mountain Lion goalkeeper as it rapidly burst the back of the net.
A few short minutes later, Concord equalized as a ball was played over top of the Cardinal defense, forcing Goalkeeper
Cody Thompson off his line. The Mountain Lion forward took the ball off the bounce and chipped it into the open net. Concord was then awarded a penalty kick as a Cardinal defender won a slide tackle and the ball inadvertently grazed his arm. Just like that, the score was 2-1 in favor of Concord heading into the half.
The second half started much like the first, very fast and very physical. The playing surface was deteriorating quickly, and the game became very direct. It also became very one-sided as the Cardinals dominated much of the play as they mounted attack after attack.
The equalizing goal came late for the Cardinals as midfielder
Vincent Faraji took the initial shot, warranting a save from the Mountain Lions Goalkeeper. The ball bounced free across the front of the goal and forward
Luke Roan smashed it home, putting the game into overtime following a 2-2 score line.
Wheeling Jesuit University wasted no time starting where they left off, as the early play again was dominated in the Cardinals' attacking half. In the 96
th minute, great combination play in the midfield created an opening for midfielder
Aitor Iniguez De Heredia. De Heredia confidently controlled the ball, took a preparation touch and buried the ball into the far post, ending the game 3-2 in favor of the Cardinals.
