Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals Grind Out Victory

Box Score Shepherdstown, W.Va. – In the second leg of the double header, the Wheeling Jesuit University Women's Soccer team took on the Shepherd University Rams in an important MEC Conference game.

The Cardinals started sluggishly, playing the first part of the game largely in the middle of the field.  Neither team had any luck sustaining any sort of attack for most of the half.  Shots were from distance at both ends, and neither keeper was challenged to make a great save.  The game went into halftime at 0-0.

After the break, the game opened up and became an end-to-end battle.  As attacks became to carry more potency, shots began to fly.  However, most were off target.  The Cardinals got a great look at the goal from a free kick in the 75th minute, taken by sophomore midfielder Meghan Horan, but was ousted by the Rams goalkeeper.  In the 82nd minute, WJU got another chance on a free kick, this time putting the shot into the wall.

Finally, after another fast attack from the Cardinals, freshman forward Nikki Hillard drew a call at the top of the 18 yard box.  Horan did not miss this opportunity, putting the ball neatly in the side netting in the 88th minute.  Wheeling Jesuit University hung on for the final few minutes to win an excellent conference battle 1-0.  Head Coach Carrie Hanna said "it was a really great feeling to capture that elusive win this season.  It was a great defensive effort and excellent free kick taken by Meghan."

Wheeling Jesuit University Women's Soccer team gets back to MEC Conference play Saturday October 18th at Concord University.  Kick off time is 12:00pm.
